A bit more about me

I love living,  learning, and teaching about Judaism,  bringing G!d’s Torah to the people.  After years of learning on my own while practicing law, realizing that the Torah was my real calling, and five years in formal rabbinical study at the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in Cincinnati, Ohio, it’s great to serve as a rabbi – finally!

I’m especially excited to be adding guitar and songleading to my skill set.  I’ve recently added inline skating – to the list of my favorite things to do – which also includes travel, cooking and eating, reading, watching movies, listening to music and public radio, and cycling.

Most importantly, I’m Hope’s husband, Eli and Danny’s dad, and owner of a terrier mix named Daisy.

I’ve caught fleeting glimpses of my world fulfilled. My story is about a recovering lawyer who sets forth along the pathways of faith and folkways of Torah for no reason other than that he knew he must. Despite the inevitable early stumbles, learning to walk with confidence, and even acquiring followers — one at a time — along the way. I am beginning to lead with confidence. For years now, I’ve been leading a Jewish renaissance by little more than dugma eesheet — personal example, by believing firmly in it and by acting as if it were already upon us. It goes a long way.As one of my heroes, Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel, put it, “a little light dispels a lot of darkness.”

Or, as a friend of his told some friends of mine, “Human progress comes about through the tireless efforts and the persistent work of dedicated individuals who are willing to be co-workers with God. Without this hard work, time itself becomes an ally of the insurgent and primitive forces of social stagnation and irrational emotionalism. We must help time and we must realize that the time is always right to do right.” (Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr., speaking to the 47th Biennial convention of the Union of American Hebrew Congregations, November, 1963)
